Saint Patricks Day in Vancouver

Are you looking to get your Irish on for Saint Patrick’s Day in Vancouver?  They are many events going on that weekend and I will list them shortly.   But first, a little information on Saint Patricks origins so you will have a wee bit of knowledge of why you are celebrating.

Being a daughter of St. Patrick, I have always believed that my own clan have a special affinity with St. Paddy.  As Fitzpatricks, we are so named as the sons (and daughters) of St. Patrick, well, at least as the devotees who kept his faith alive.  My fathers family is from Taur, Newmarket area,  anybody know us out there? On my mother’s side, we are Lynchs, from County Cork.  I have many fond memories of Ireland, including my time spent with the wonderful nuns in Blackrock and Kinsale. You gotta miss those boarding school days!

St. Patrick is credited with driving the snakes out of Ireland, and where a snake had been, a shamrock grew to replace it.  But Patrick was not an Irishman.  He was the son of a Roman/British soldier living in Britain, when as a young boy he was kidnapped and sold into slavery and taken to Ireland.  Many years later after he had escaped,  he returned under God’s direction to bring Christianity to the Irish people he had grown to love.  He stayed until he died.  March 17th marks St. Patrick’s day of death.   We spend the day in celebration of the Irish and the Irish culture.  Did you know that St. Patrick used the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity?

You can participate in St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in many ways.  Fun for the whole family can be had at the annual free benefit, St. Paddy’s for Parks at Shorty’s Garden and Home, 10006 SE Mill Plain, on Saturday, March 16th. Then there is  the annual Paddy’s Hough parade in uptown Vancouver,  on Friday, March 15th at 12:30. And don’t forget St. Patrick’s Day on the Farm at the Pomeroy Living History Farm in Yacolt on Saturday, March 16th.                                                                                                         For those who may just want to stay home and watch some Irish movies, some of my favorites are: The Quiet Man, The Matchmaker, The Secret of Roanish, The Field, Waking Ned Devine, Darby O’Gill and The Little People, Finigan’s Rainbow  and Leprecauns.

If your are  looking for some adult only fun, check out our local genuine Irishtown Pub for Irish food, dancing and music March 15th, 16th and 17th.  The  little leprechauns may stay until 9 pm when they must go home.  For a list of their St.Patrick’s Day celebration weekend venue see  Then there is the Clark County Parks benefit at Shorty’s Garden with Irish music after 5:30 on March 15th, Irish grub provided by Beaches Restaurant,

Don’t forget to pick up some authentic Irish fare such as Irish soda crackers,  rashers, black pudding, kippers and other Irish delicacies at Coventry Gardens of London Shop at 13503 SE Mill Plain, They may even have some Smarties left if your lucky.

So go on and get your Irish out!  Put on a bit of green,  and celebrate Saint Patricks Day, for on this day, everyone is a wee bit Irish.

Stay tuned for Portland Saint Paddy’s celebrations.
